Florida Keys - AttractionsTraveling to the Florida Keys is an unforgettable experience to enjoy either alone, with your partner, family, friends or colleagues. Throughout Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key, Key West, and their adjacent small islands, there are a number of Florida Keys attractions for any budget and taste. When it comes to nature encounters, the Florida Keys are depicted as paradise on earth. However, for those who love fun and life celebrations, paradise is also the closest adjective applicable to any of these Florida Keys attractions.
Some attractions are common to all the Keys, even though the main recreational facility is located on one of the islands. As an example, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is headquartered in Key West, but has an Upper Regional Office at Key Largo, a Middle Regional Office in Marathon, and another Lower Regional Office located in Key West. Ask your travel agent for budget tours to the Florida Keys if you are short of money or time but you still want to see lots of Florida Keys attractions. There are many things to do across the Upper, Middle and Lower Keys that may not be in your budget, however, if you schedule your time accordingly you will be able to enjoy many of the major attractions within any budget.

UPPER KEYS ATTRACTIONS
KEY LARGO
Located in the northernmost part of the Florida Keys archipelago, Key Largo is the largest of all of them, which is 33 miles long, connected to Florida City by U.S. Route 1, and one of the Keys that feature numerous recreational opportunities. Contiguous to the Everglades National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and adjacent to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, a site registered as one of the National Register of Historic Places in the United States, Key Largo's attraction includes nature, history, and entertainment. John Pennekamp Underwater Park is in fact, the main attraction on Key Largo, comprising about 70 nautical square miles of marine life in the Atlantic Ocean, just off Mile Marker 102.5. Key Largo is famous for the movie of the same name filmed in 1948 and featuring a boat called the African Queen. Today, visitors can find this boat anchored at Key Largo Harbor Marina, Mile Marker 99.7, next to the Holiday Inn. Anther famous boat, which calls Key Largo home, is the Thayer IV, from the Theatre Production "On Golden Pond"

ISLAMORADA
Islamorada is an island where fishing is a worldwide renowned activity. Sportfishing competes with commercial fishing are both high in popularity, both aid in the island's economy. Therefore, it is not strange that most of Islamorada's attractions are related to water and fishing activities, excelling San Pedro Underwater Archaeological Preserve State Park among all them. Flocks of seagulls, warm breezes and sunken treasures await visitors about 1.25 nautical miles south from Indian Key, one of the small islands that conforms Islamorada. Indian Key Historical Site and Lignumvitae Botanical Site, Mile Marker 78.5 are two other attractions nearby. Theater of the Sea, situated at Mile Marker 84.5 is an entertaining and educational marine animal park with natural salt-water lagoons inhabited by marine flora and fauna and provides dolphin encounters among other activities.

MIDDLE KEYS ATTRACTIONS
MARATHON
The heart of the Florida Keys was also the heart of ephemeral piracy and wrecking centuries ago. Lack of freshwater in this region made pirates desist lurking here and it was not until the 20th century when Marathon’s only attraction consisted of the village where the railroad workers lived in Pigeon Key. Today, Marathon offers historic sites, nature refuges and crystal clear beaches, which along with the annual Seven Mile Bridge run and other events throughout the year are the main attractions here as far as Florida Keys attractions go.

There are two close attractions, which are part of the Middle Keys. The Dolphin Research Center in Mile Marker 59, and the Pigeon Key situated 2.2 miles west of Marathon, a place listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, home of the railroad workers, and the old Seven Mile Bridge, substituted by the actual one that visitors see.
LOWER KEYS ATTRACTIONS
BIG PINE KEY
Among the Florida Keys, this is the preferred stop for nature lovers and environmentalists. Most of the attractions in this area are connected with wildlife, flora, and fauna, which is rescued and protected in this place. The National Key Deer Refuge is the main and large attraction in Big Pine Key, including the Watson Hammock nature trail and a complex of other refuges belonging to the Lower Key. Located at Mile Marker 35, the National Key Deer Refuge protects the endangered deer of the region, however, deer species can be seen almost anywhere in the region.

KEY WEST
Ernest Hemingway chose Key West to live in for not only the island's privileged location and closeness to Cuba, his other preferred destination, but also because this Key is truly a paradise.
